I’m not much of a green thumb, and I’m even less a ”survive off the land” pioneer type, so I won’t add words to this post by trying to act like I know anything about farming or gardening. But I do know, from a few attempts at herb gardens, that it takes a lot more effort to start with seeds than it does to keep an established plant alive.
Growth. Fruit. New things and seasons. This is what I’m processing deeply today.
If we know that we need something new in our life, how do we get it? I’m not talking about temporary things. We can buy that easy enough. Certainly we all know the statement “a pair of shoes can change your life” just isn’t true, but I personally take joy in trying to disprove the idea.
But what about those glaringly painful areas we know need something richer? Life changing even. We can’t identify what it is because we’ve probably never had it. So we might numb the emptiness with too much work, exercise, shopping, food or worse. Or maybe we carefully craft a shiny but impenetrable coat of armor to keep at bay any questions which might expose the bare areas of our soul?
Germination is most simply defined as the process in which something grows from a seed. We understand it in biology and we see it happen as the tiny green shoots burst from the soil where we planted tulip bulbs, tomatoes or basil. If that process has happened, then the environmental conditions were favorable for that seed to germinate.
You might wonder how this applies to us apart from a desire to glean our own ”organic” food or colorfully decorate a section of our yard?
You see, the average person will live approximately seventy-two years on earth: barring a tragedy or cataclysmic event, that is 26,280 days. The majority of those days you are subject to words, thoughts and ideas all of which are planted like tiny seeds into your mind and heart. The ”environmental” conditions of your life help determine which words, thoughts or ideas will germinate.
If we want something new, we need to fashion a life with conditions favorable to the growth of the words, thoughts and ideas being revealed to us each day.
“So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.”
