Christmas is rolling around in just a few days and in the midst of holiday happiness comes pressure and stress.
Stress isn’t endemic to our 21st Century lives: the writer of Psalm 94 said, “In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.”
If he had a ‘multitude’ before the birth of Christ, we’re bound to have a few in 2023!
We can mitigate stress, of course. Well laid plans and healthy expectations ease some of the struggle but, I think God wants us to experience true rest.
Rest in our lives is found when we look to God for comfort instead of people, gifts or the perfect Christmas get together. Rest is a choice we make in the craziness.
Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls.” Matthew 11:29
God loves us unconditionally. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is a reminder of just how important we are to Him. It reminds us that we always have somewhere to turn when we are feeling hopeless.
“The Lord is there to rescue all who are discouraged and have given up hope.” Psalm 34:18
Physical struggles, financial burdens and broken or lost relationships are difficult to handle on our own. When our hearts are troubled, we can turn to God for comfort. Knowing that we have His unconditional love wraps our heart in peace.
Sometimes friends, and even family, are unable to understand what we are going through. The only listening ear that knows exactly what we are feeling is our Heavenly Father.
The love that God has for Jesus passes down to us because we are His children. Knowing we are welcomed with open arms is comforting to our souls.
Today, look to God whenever your soul feels disquieted. His everlasting love is ready to pour down on you and give you rest.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26
